The labour minister and the Industries Development Corporation officials were informed of the current health, sanitation and control break down at the Margao Industrial Estate.
The deputy collector informed that the IDC has failed to maintain their estate and keep a check on the safety and legality of operation of the units.
It is to be noted that the panchayat powers are limited to taking action against the estate but have time and time again requested the authorities to take action against the scrapyards.
Most of the Industrial sheds in Margao Industrial Estate have turned into allegedly illegally operated scrap yards and has recently grabbed attention after 29 cases of Dengue have been reported in the Area. An inspection last week had revealed the filthy conditions the sheds operate in. One of the shed was also seen housing several underage labourers who had no employment registration or health cards. The Labour Minister says “I will immediately send labour inspectors and have full inspection of the labourers at the Industrial Estate and will initiate strict action against violations”.
“These scrapyard need to be removed from the industrial and areas. Our own Goans allow the scraps to flourish. I feel the laborers may not be staying in industrial sheds..but it has to be subjected to inspection and decided,” said Velim MLA Benjamin Silva.
