CALANGUTE: Former Arpora-Nagoa deputy sarpanch and sitting Panch Cleophas Fernandes was arrested and later released in connection with hill cutting activity at Xavier Retreat House at Baga on Thursday.
Anjuna police arrested  for criminal trespass into the property of the Jesuit Community. He was later released on a personal surety of Rs 10,000.
It may be recalled that the Director of Xavier Retreat House Fr Ronnie D’Souza had complained to the Anjuna police over alleged hill cutting and trespass into the property of the Jesuit Community by Cleophas Fernandes. Fr D’Souza had also stated that the hill cutting caused considerable damage to the retaining wall and is posing a threat to life of the occupants of the Xavier Retreat House and the house itself.
Though the accused was arrested and later released on bail for hill cutting, the Xavier Retreat House remains exposed to fear of collapsing during the rains if nothing is done to repair and rebuild the retaining wall.
