Goa Forward Party president and Fatorda MLA Vijai Sardesai on Thursday refuted the state government’s claim of initiating the celebration of ‘Asmitai Dis’, asserting that the event was first formally observed in 2018 during his tenure as a minister.
Sardesai said that ‘Asmitai Dis’ was celebrated in a “concrete and meaningful manner” in 2018 to honour 40 heroes of the historic Opinion Poll, which played a pivotal role in safeguarding Goa’s identity. “It is not the present government that celebrated ‘Asmitai Dis’. We had already done it when I was a minister,” he said.
He accused the government of attempting to take undue credit, adding that the earlier celebration had a clear purpose and historical significance. Sardesai reiterated that the contribution of Opinion Poll heroes must be remembered with sincerity rather than used for political claims.
