That the SAG will spruce up the canteen only when the swimming pool complex is razed down and upgraded ahead of the National Games shows the amount of concern officials pay to the existing amenities. The canteen – which is patronised by the sports lovers and children practicing at the SAG complex, apart from the public in general – is crying for attention.
While the building exterior received a white wash when the Jawaharlal Nehru stadium played host to the inaugural and closing ceremonies of the Lusofonia Games, the interior was left unattended. And, the ground reality hasn’t changed for the better since the hosting of the Lusofonia Games till date though there’ve been complaints galore of the prevailing conditions.
A mere white wash to the canteen interior will give the premises a different feel and replacing the worn out and broken chairs will give respite to people frequenting the joint, sources said, raising questions as to why the government is waiting for the swimming pool up-gradation to do up the canteen.
When Herald drew the attention of the SAG Director Sandeep Jacques, he said that once the swimming pool is upgraded, the canteen automatically will get the face lift.
A regular visitor to the canteen, however, wondered whether the government has no money in its coffers even to white wash the canteen measuring a little over 50 sq mts or replace the broken chairs and tables, which may cost the exchequer not more than Rs 20,000.
