PANJIM: Goa Mining People’s Front has declared a week-long bandh in the last week of August to demand the immediate resumption of mining in the State.
Addressing a press conference in Panjim on Saturday, Christopher Fonseca who is also the general secretary of the All India Trade Union Congress (aituc) said that the bandh across the mining talukas will be peaceful.
“We have resolved to hold a bandh in the mining talukas from August 21 to 28. Each taluka will have one day bandh,” Fonseca said.
On August 29, they will organize a rally in Panjim to demand the resumption of mining immediately after Ganesh Chaturthi festival (September 9).
“It’s nearly one year that mining activity has been halted after the Supreme Court order. Twenty five percent cent of the people depend on mining for their income. All are facing a financial crisis,” Fonseca claimed.
Fonseca alleged that neither the Centre nor the state government are serious about solving the problem.
