PONDA: Bandora locals along with the village panchayat on Tuesday demanded that the government provide a safer place for the migrant labourers standing by the roadside in search of daily wage jobs, thereby risking their lives.
Every day, a large number of migrant workers in search of daily wage jobs, dangerously gather by the roadside at the accident-prone Ponda KTC bus stand risking their lives.
Before any untoward incident takes place, the Bandora locals including Sarpanch Rajesh Naik demanded that the government provide a safer place for these workers in the morning hours.
Reportedly, since past two decades, the migrant labour market is operating at KTC bus stand. Besides this, migrant workers also gather near the Ponda underpass, at Savitri Hall junction, where everyday around 400 daily labourers wait by the roadside in search of daily wage jobs early morning hours and needy local Goans and contractors hire them as per their requirements by fixing their wages. However, these workers including female, in the rush hours of morning between 7 and 9 often encroach on the road and there are chances of accidents.
In the morning hours, passenger buses drivers moving towards KTC bus stand often drives their vehicles in a hurry. The risk factor is, many passengers buses proceed to the KTC bus stand, using a short cut way and drives through wrong direction and while taking a sharp turn at the KTC junction, the chances are that the buses may hit the workers gathered by the roadside in search of daily wage jobs.
Therefore, the locals urged the government to provide them a safe place where they can safely wait in search of daily jobs without blocking the traffic and passenger buses.
