PONDA: Bandora villagers have demanded installation of traffic signal system at KTC bus stand junction before inaugurating the newly constructed four-lane road at Ponda.
The demand was made at a meeting the officials of the National Highway and PWD had with the locals on Friday to discuss the opening of the four-lane road. Following the demand, the officials inspected the KTC bus stand junction on Saturday.
After the inspection, the officials said that they were not inclined to install traffic signal system at the KTC bus stand junction as they would close the crossing.
According to the officials, the KTC junction is on a slope and even if traffic signal system is installed there, it is less likely that the speeding vehicles would follow the signals. “In fact, installing traffic signal there would only lead to accidents. Therefore, crossing at the junction will be closed for the safety locals,” an official said.
However, the locals strongly oppose opening the four-lane road without providing for traffic signal system at the KTC junction. “Traffic signal systems installed at many places in Goa are working well, then, why will it not work at Ponda?” asked a villager.
Bandora Panch Rajesh Naik said, “Since widening of service road is opposed by the locals, I suggested that the crossing at KTC be opened and to control vehicular movement, traffic signal system be installed and speed breakers erected.”
It may be recalled that some months ago locals had came on road demanding safety measures to cross the junction before opening of new four-lane road at KTC junction.
