Burglars strike rich at Vasco, Calangute

Burglars decamped with cash and goods worth over Rs 3.5 lakh in two separate burglaries at Vasco and Calangute.
OUR VASCO REPORTER ADDS: Burglars made their presence felt in the Port Town, after cash and goods worth Rs 2.5 lakh were burgled from a mobile shop, opposite Hotel La Paz Garden on Monday night.
Owner of Arvind Cellular, Ram Kripal Halwai informed that apart from Rs 14,000, mobile handsets worth Rs 2.3 lakh were stolen from the shop.
According to Vasco police, the burglars gained entry by breaking the locks. The incident came to light Tuesday morning, when Halwai found the shutter slightly bent and was even perplexed to see new locks on his shutter.
Police said that they had to break open the new locks to gain entry into the shop to investigate the case.
Surprisingly, although another mobile shop was just next door, the burglars did not touch it.
This is the second time that the shop has been targeted by burglars. On August 24, 2007, Hutch Gallery at the same place had been burgled.
Statistics at the Vasco police station reveal, of 58 thefts that occurred last year, only 28 were detected.
Besides, out of five robberies and 39 burglaries, three robberies and 14 burglary cases were detected.
Sources further said that in the last three months, 7 thefts were reported and not a single one has been detected till date.
CALANGUTE CORRESPONDENT ADDS: Computer accessories worth over Rs 1 lakh were stolen, after unknown persons broke into Vidya Niketan High School in Calangute between Monday and Tuesday morning.
Headmistress Regina Fernandes complained that some persons entered the school by breaking the lock of the back gate and used duplicate keys to enter the computer room.
Two monitors, four CPUs, four keyboards, one scanner, one coloured printer, three batteries, two sets of speakers, 10 re-writable CDs and a mouse, all worth Rs 1.29 lakh were stolen, Fernandes stated.
