OLD GOA: Burglars broke into one flat and made a bid on another flat at St Caitan, Merces, in broad daylight on Tuesday.
In the first incident at Vollan Homes, gold bangles worth around Rs 2 lakh and cash of around Rs 20,000 were stolen. The burglary, however, proved futile in the second incident at Lalita Apartments, as the burglar was unable to break open the door.
Sirisha and Vivek Shenvi had gone to fetch their daughter from kindergarten classes at around 12.30 pm, when a burglar entered their flat at Vollan Homes by breaking the latch of their main door.
When the couple returned home at around 1.20 pm, Vivek saw a person inside their flat and caught hold of him. While Vivek gave sound thrashing to the robber, his wife Sirisha alerted the neighbours.
The burglar somehow managed to escape from the site and the couple later alerted the police.
Sirisha informed that four gold bangles worth Rs 2 lakh and cash of around Rs 20,000 were stolen from her handbag that was kept inside the cupboard.
The shoes of the burglar, an iron rod, cigarette packet, a towel, a plastic bag and a screw driver were recovered by the police from the spot.
In the other incident at Lalita Apartments, a burglar tried to break into the flat belonging to Santana Rebello, when she and her husband were away in their ancestral home at St Inez.
The incident came to light when the couple returned to their flat at around 1.30 pm and saw that the latch of the door removed. The robber was, however, unable to break open the door.
While some locals suspected that both incidents were handiwork of one person, others felt it was the work of a gang.
