PANJIM: The villagers of Chimbel organised a candlelight march on Saturday to protest against the death of a villager in an accident at the accident-prone junction.
The villagers demanded answers on why the government is delaying the construction of the flyover, for diverting traffic above the accident-prone junction.
They alleged that the delay in construction of flyover is resulting in deaths of the villagers. A villager Ajay Kholkar said that the government authorities are not fulfilling their assurances.
“In May 2022 when an accident happened here, we had protested and the local MLA and government assured us of constructing a secondary road for traffic and assured to start work in two months. However, the work has still not begun,” complained Ajay.
Ajay also informed that the Chief Minister has already been briefed of the dangers on this road but no action has been taken.
A local panch said that all we know is about the deaths on the spot but so many die after being taken to hospital.
He also said that the government shouldn’t test the patience of the people or else another roadblock will be staged.
Ajay said that Article 21 of the Constitution gives every person the right to life but this Article is being violated here.
“There is no option other than a flyover. The government is saying that work has begun and it will be tendered soon. An assurance was given that the work will commence in two months, but there is no sign of work beginning,” local panch said.
Women and the family members of the deceased from the village also took part in the protest and demanded a solution soon.
