When Oliver twist asked for more, he was met with hostility. The situation is similar in the Canacona Municipal Council, headed by Chairperson Simon Rebello. He faces redress from citizens and tourists (foreign and Indian) visiting the area famous for Palolem Beach, Cabo de Ram and other such tourist friendly locations.
Visitors complain that the roads are too narrow, there’s no proper drainage, stray dogs are a menace and cattle are seen every where including on the beaches.
Rebello, while speaking to Herald noted that he solved parking issues to a great extent and with the help of the police, managed to drive out the touts who harass tourists. Additionally, he said that on his visit to the Health Center, he saw that patients had to sit on the floor outside the doctor’s cabin due to the paucity of furniture and he took it upon himself to install more furniture from his own resources. He divulged that he completed work pending from 2013 amounting to over Rs 85 lakhs.
He asserted his desire to contest the elections again from any ward and is confident that people will elect him as there is a lot of pending work like construction of linking roads, storm water drains, desilting of streams, widening of roads, developing the sports ground at Devbag and such.
Rebello is also in the hospitality business as he owns shacks on Palolem beach but devotes most of his time to attend to grievances of people who visit him at his residence.
