PANJIM?(HND): Is the Government committed to establish the Goa Human Rights Commission and what was the progress into the matter as on June 30, 2010? This was the question tabled by Santa Cruz MLA Victoria Fernandes in the House to Home Minister Ravi Naik.
In his written reply Naik informed the MLA that as per Section 22 of the Protection of Human Rights Act, 1933, the chairman and members of State Human Rights Commission shall be appointed by the Governor after obtaining recommendations of a committee formed for the purpose.
The committee consists of Chief Minister as the chairperson and Speaker, Home Minister and Leader of Opposition as its members.
Naik, who is not attending the assembly due to health reasons, further informed the committee was to meet on June 21, 2010. However, the meeting was adjourned and the same is scheduled to be held shortly, he replied. There is no mention of the reason for adjournment of the meeting.
On a question whether there was a move to refer case of human rights violation from Goa to Maharashtra Human Rights Commission, the minister replied in the negative.
