PANJIM: Ahead of the Panjim by-polls, the Congress party has accused the government of failing to tackle the garbage woes in the capital city arguing that former Chief Minister and ex-MLA for Panjim, Manohar Parrikar, was not serious about solving the problem.
“Panjim is sitting on garbage bomb. The city stinks of garbage. The government has not taken any steps to tackle the issue,” party spokesman Sunil Kawthankar told a press conference on Sunday.
The Congress has picked garbage as one of the major issues on its agenda for the forthcoming by-election promising the State to get rid of the problem. The party leader pointed out to the JNNRUM funds of Rs 100 crore allotted for setting up a waste management plant at Bainguinim, work of which is not complete. “The work has not started. This shows how serious the former MLA was in wanting to solve the problem,” he said.
