PANJIM: The Congress has threatened to oppose any moves to shift the proposed marina project from Nauxim to Calangute, as suggested by Ports Minister Michael Lobo.
Speaking to media persons, Congress general secretary and former Calangute MLA Agnelo Fernandes said the people of Calangute will never allow government to have marina project in their constituency. “The Congress warns the government and minister Michael Lobo against any such plans,” he said.
Stating the government can look for alternate site for marina, Lobo had earlier this week said he is ready to welcome the project in his constituency if people and panchayat agree.
Reacting to it, Fernandes slammed Lobo for trying to destroy the livelihood of local fishing community in Calangute by encouraging marina to boost tourism.
“Michael has not understood as why the people of Nauxim are opposing the project. Their basic concern is that the livelihood of fishermen there would be affected and will also lead to environment and ecological degradation,” the Congress leader said.
He demanded that the marina project should be scrapped totally.
