A 2.5 metre crocodile was rescued from a rivulet at Polem in a four-hours operation by forest officials assisted by a few locals on Friday night.
Some locals were reportedly proceeding to their fields, when they noticed a crocodile in a rivulet in a dense forest.
The locals then alerted others and the word also reached an animal lover Satish Painguinkar, who is also a panch of Poinguinim village.
Painguinkar then informed forest officials at Hathipal Rescue Centre, of Cotigao Wild Life Sanctuary and they decided to rescue the crocodile.
The rescue operation began at about 11 pm on Friday at the rivulet situated 2 Kms to the east of the highway.
Cotigao Wildlife Sanctuary RFO Vilas Gauns and his team besides Satish Painginkar and Deepak Pagui (of Polem), took part in the rescue operation.
The crocodile was later taken to the Hathipal Rescue Centre, Cotigao at about 3 am on Saturday.
News of the rescue operations reportedly drew the interest of forest officials elsewhere in the state, as some forest officials reached Hathipal Rescue Centre on Saturday afternoon.
The reptile was later shifted to the Bondla sanctuary.
