BICHOLIM: Bicholim police arrested a resident of Dhargal-Pernem on charges of duping a widow from Pale-Bicholim to the tune of Rs 6 lakh.
According to police, Padmini Gawas complained that three years ago, the suspect, Prakash Gaonkar alias Nitin Nandu Vaingankar, demanded gold ornaments worth Rs 2.5 lakh, and cash of Rs 3.5 lakh to purchase a truck. She stated that she gave him the cash and gold ornaments to help him. The complainant further stated that the suspect was absconding since the day she handed him the cash and gold ornaments. She lodged a complaint at Bicholim police station in July.
Police who were on the lookout for the accused over the last three-and-half months succeeded in nabbing him by laying a trap at Malpe-Pernem on Thursday. Police recovered gold ornaments from the accused, which he had pledged to three different banks.
