There is no need to set up committees to clean up Goa of its garbage. We can do it ourselves should we respect the dignity of labor. Swachch Goa, nitoll Goem a campaign launched on October 2, Gandhi Jayanti seems to have shown the way.
In the village of Salvador do Mundo, a youthful villager leads by example. All one needs to do is pick the implement of one’s choice easily available in the market and get to work. He has done away with the migrant labourers demanding the sky with conditions and without any tool in their hands to do the job to save labour cost, using a bush-cutter and 2 liters of petrol, and only six hours of work at leisure to clean his ancestral house property in the village.
“Don’t talk, lead by example,” he says adding further, “if you want a job done properly, you have to do it yourself.”
Should everyone do the same in his/her own way, we could be controlling the migrant labour market. As he prepares to leave in his black Mahindra Scorpio, the message he gives is clear: Swachch mhojem ghor, mhojo ganv. (Maintain your house and its surrounding clean, your village beautiful.)
