MARGAO, JUNE 15
After unsuccessful attempts over the last two years, the Margao Municipal Council is all set to revive the door-to-door garbage collection of waste from the city hotels and eateries.
If Margao Municipal Chairperson Savio Coutinho is to be believed, door-to-door hotel garbage collection will commence from June 20. A confident Coutinho stated that the hotels eateries will be charged a daily garbage collection fee ranging from Rs 10-25 depending on the hotel category and the quantum of waste generated in the establishment.
That the Civic meant business this time was evident by the fact that the Municipality has engaged 10 daily wage workers, besides two drivers to carry out the waste collection after sunset. “The 10 labourers, two truck driver and two trucks will be used for the purpose of hotel waste collection, beginning everyday at 7 pm”, he said.
The MMC Chairperson did not see any problem or confrontation with the hotel owners, saying the hotels have been cooperative and supportive of the Civic body’s door-to-door waste collection concept on condition the waste is collected and disposed on a daily basis without fail.
“We are now well prepared to start the exercise with some dedicated staff and machinery. The door-to-door waste collection will reduced the daily collection of wet waste from the bins and help mitigate the nuisance to the citizens”, he added.
The Commercial Capital plays host to around 400 hotels and eateries and sources in the Civic body says the door-to-door waste collection exercise can be carried out without any loss for the    muicipality. “Even if the Civic body charges minimum Rs 10 per hotel, revenue to the tune of Rs 4000 can come in for a single day. This revenue can off set the cost of manpower, machinery and fuel pegged at around Rs 2500 per day”, remarked a Civic official.
Margao Municipality’s ambitious hotel door-to-door garbage collection scheme had been lying in the dumps for want of manpower and a lack of proper approach on the part of the Civic body to make the scheme work successfully.
Meanwhile, Residents of Margao staying in the vicinity of the telephone department office on Tuesday complained to the Margao Civic body over accumulated waste and garbage right infront of their housing complex.
Accompanied by ward Councilor Rajendra Azgaonkar, the residents pointed out that waste is being into the municipal bin right infront of the housing complex, posing a nuisance to the school going children and adults. They said the waste flows right at the entrance to the housing complex, with the Civic body found wanting in clearing the waste from time to time.
