In yet anoth er incident highlighting the growing menace of chain-snatching in Navelim, a 69-year-old woman was robbed of her gold chain early on Friday morning while on her way to the Na velim Church for prayer. The victim, Fransisca Gonsalves, a resident of Na velim, was attacked by two unidentified men riding a motorcycle, who snatched her gold chain and fled from the spot. The incident adds to a series of similar thefts targeting elderly women in the area. A com plaint has been lodged with the Margao Police Station. According to the com plaint, the incident oc curred around 6:15 am near the site of the un der-construction college building in Navelim. As Fransisca was walking to wards the church, two men on a black KTM motorcy cle approached her from behind. The rider, wearing a helmet and black jacket, and the pillion rider, in a green jacket, carried out the theft. The motorcycle reportedly had no number plate. The culprits allegedly pushed Fransisca from behind, and as she bent down, the pillion rider snatched the gold chain from her neck before the duo sped away through the road behind the Navelim Church. Some residents attempted to chase them, but the robbers managed to escape. Local activist Adv Prati ma Coutinho condemned the rising number of such incidents in Navelim, not ing that senior citizens are being increasingly targeted. She pointed out that on Oc tober 10, Innocent Gomes (61) was similarly robbed of her Rs 1.2 lakh gold chain while on her way to church for morning prayers. Ear lier, another 74-year-old woman was targeted while on an evening walk in the same locality. Fransisca, who had ear lier worked as a domestic help in Kuwait, said the stolen chain was worth around Rs 2.5 lakh, pur chased in 2008.
