PANJIM: For the first time the State Election Commission (SEC) has decided to use electronic voting machines (EVMs) for the ensuing Corporation of City of Panaji (CCP) elections.

However, ballot paper will be used for elections in the 11 municipal councils and by-polls to one vacant ward of Sankhali municipal council, panchayats wards and Navelim ZP constituency.
The SEC has proposed to hold elections of CCP, municipal councils and other vacant wards in the third week of March.
The term of the current CCP ends on March 14, while the government has already appointed administrators to 11 municipal councils after their terms ended on November 4 last year. The election to the Navelim ZP constituency was countermanded following the death of Congress candidate Jose Santa Rita Coelho.
Elections to 11 municipal councils were due in October last year but were postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. On January 14 this year, the State Election Commission issued a notification postponing the elections by three months, till April 2021 or the election date which may be determined by the Commission.
