The horror and shock was shared by two families who lived next door to each in adjoining rooms in rented premises.
The two houses located on Margao-Colva road at Mungul were engulfed in the fire that broke out at 9.50 am when all the family members were out of the house.
The first house belonged to Sanjay Ghode and his wife Maya was in tears after she saw all their belongings, clothes, money and daugther’s study text books destroyed. Fire services personnel that rushed to the spot said the fire had broken out due to a short circuit and the Ghode family suffered damages of approximately Rs 2.9 lakh.
Former Fatorda MLA Damu Naik also rushed to the spot and assured the Ghode family of providing all possible help from the government.
The other house belonged to Dattaram Gaunkekar. The fire services estimated the losses at below Rs 1 lakh. The fire services timely effort stopped the fire from spreading. The families were seen trying to sort out what they could recover from the huge pile of burnt items left behind.
The families stated that they were at work when their neighbours informed them that their house was in flames.
Theft plaint at Margao
Town police have registered an offence against Mohammad Zakir Hussain for committing theft of a 21-inch Samsung LCD TV worth Rs 20,000 on Saturday.
According to Margao police officials, offences have been registered against the accused under section 454, 457 and 380 of IPC
According to the complaint filed by Milli Fadte, wife of Chandan Fadte and resident of Tisk Ponda, the accused committed the theft by bending the shutter at Millis Saloon and Glamour Touch, Margao. Police added that the stolen property had been recovered at the instance of the accused and that further investigations are in progress.
