Cash, gold ornaments worth Rs 13.45 lakh stolen

SANGUEM/PONDA: Gold ornaments and cash worth a combined Rs 13.45 lakh were stolen in four separate burglaries at Pajimol (Sanguem), Collem and Mollem in broad daylight on Monday.
According to police sources, a burglar broke into the house of Dashrat Naik at Pajimol on Monday afternoon and stole gold ornaments worth Rs 10.5 lakh and cash of Rs 75,000.
Police sources informed that Dashrat and his wife had gone to a nearby village temple to perform rituals at the time of the burglary. On their return, they were startled to find their house ransacked.
Sources further informed that the burglar and his accomplice had reportedly used a motorcycle to commit the offence. While the burglar entered the house through the backdoor of the house, an accomplice stood on the main road to keep a track on the couple returning from the temple.
On entering the house, the burglar broke open two cupboards located in two different rooms and decamped with gold ornaments, reportedly valued at Rs 10.5 lakh, and cash of Rs 75,000. However, the burglar could not lay his hands on the third cupboard, where more gold ornaments were stored, as the accomplice alerted the burglar that the couple was on their way home.
Incidentally, while the police have pegged the value of the stolen gold ornaments at Rs 10.5 lakh, family members claimed that stolen gold ornaments were worth Rs 24 lakh, as the ornaments had been purchased for the wedding ceremony of the couple’s daughter.
Sanguem Police led by PSI Sachin Panelkar went to the site to conduct investigations into the burglary.
A sniffer dog was pressed into service, but it was to no avail as the dog could only sniff a trail till the road where the motorcycle was parked. Later in the evening, a fingerprint expert also visited the site of offence. Sanguem police is investigation the case.
In another burglary at Costi-Ambemoll, burglars decamped with cash and gold ornaments worth Rs 94,000 from the house of Babu Nago Rekdo at about 4.30 pm.
When Rekdo returned home, he was shocked to find his house burgled and immediately lodged a complaint with Curchorem Police.
At Bimbal-Collem, the burglars broke open the front door of the house belonging to Ramakant Khandeparkar and decamped with cash of Rs 35,000, two gold chains and two rings, all worth Rs 1.26 lakh.
Police further informed that the incident took place when Khandeparkar along with his wife had left their residence to offer Pooja at the Collem temple, while their son also left for school at Sanvordem.
When Khandeparkar and his wife returned home at about 11.20 am, they noticed that gold ornaments and cash were stolen from their cupboard.
In another burglary in Mollem, the burglars entered the house of Mangaldas Gavde, but could not lay their hands on the booty as they fled from the site when some inmates entered the house. Collem Police conducted the panchanama.
