PONDA: Ponda Police on Tuesday nabbed a three-member gang allegedly involved in burglary cases in Ponda.
According to Ponda Ponda, accused Shivaji Chawan (23), Venktesh Lamani (19) and Laxman Haddimani (29), all from Mudalgi-Gadag, Karnataka, allegedly burgled several houses in Canacona and Ponda. They allegedly used a motorcycle to commit the offence.
Ponda Police produced the trio before JMFC Ponda who remanded them to three days police custody for further inquiry.
According to Ponda PI C L Patil, the accused persons were arrested by Canacona Police on March 16 in a house theft case and during the interrogation, the trio confessed having committed theft in two houses in Ponda in November and December and one house in January. The accused were later handed over to Ponda Police.
“They were residing at Nessai-Margao, but they used to commit thefts away from Margao. The accused used to target houses situated in isolated places along the roadside so that after committing the theft, they were able to flee from the spot easily,” informed PI Patil.
Police further informed that they burgled a house, belonging to Rudresh Kurtikar, at Curti bypass road on November 18 and decamped with cash of Rs 30,000, one gold chain, silver coin and other items, all worth Rs 57,000.
Within nine more, they targeted the house of Pandurang Gavde at Bonbag-Bethora, Ponda, and decamped with gold ornaments worth Rs 85,000 and cash of Rs 10,000. The burglars also burgled the house of Shashikant Ram Gaonkar and stole gold ornaments worth Rs 1 lakh and two laptops worth Rs 44,000.
Police said the accused were also involved in one case at Gadag-Karnataka, where they allegedly obtained gold from a bank. A police team will be sent to Gadag for further inquiry and Ponda Police is investigating the case.
