Garbage is a major issue for the state as of now. The Swach Bharat Abhiyaan has been imposed in Goa, mainly in Panjim even as the Smart City project appears to put Panjim in a state of transition. However, garbage is seen lying around in the heart of the city and no action is being taken. According to the Smart City project, garbage is one of the major highlights of the plan and hence the government should take a major decision with regard to it, immediately.
Corporation of the city of Panjim (CCP) member Kabir Pinto Makhija accused the CCP of not taking action on the garbage issue, in spite of being informed several times.
“I have informed the mayor several times; by sms, email, phone calls and also brought him for a site inspection. I have also raised this issue at 3 council meetings but no action has been taken. Why this step-motherly treatment to my ward only?” Makhija questioned.
Heaps of garbage is seen in different places of Panjim and mainly in ward 11, situated near Don Bosco College and the market lane. There are different events at the college venue due to which a lot of citizens encounter this issue. This garbage is also a drawback for the state tourism as this isn’t what a tourist would want to see. These areas are mainly crowded and immediate action has to be taken to clear the garbage which also occupies parking spaces.
The garbage appears to be cleaned only on specific occasions such as IFFI and not otherwise. The Government should not only look at main noticeable places of the city, but the city as a whole as the CCP is appointed for the whole city and the people. There are various places in ward 11, mainly the heart of Panjim where there are untouched heaps of garbage lying around.
This careless behaviour by the Government only depicts that the Government itself is breaking the laws imposed by them.
The residents of these areas at which garbage is being dumped are troubled by the issue and seek an immediate solution before the harsh treatment on the environment of Panjim takes a toll on the city as this issue also harms the hygiene maintained in the society.
Clanny Fernandes, a resident of Panjim said, “I have complained a couple of times but nothing has been done. There is so much garbage lying around my residence due to which people are suffering.”
