PANJIM: Goa University (GU) has constituted a committee to rationalise the intake students as it aims to meet its enrolment goal of 2,000 students. Admissions for 2015-16 crossed the 1,000 mark.
The committee, headed by Dean of Commerce Faculty, Y V Reddy, will suggest which departments are in need of space considering that new admissions, particularly in the Science faculty, see a significant growth every year.
“The committee will suggest rationalising the intake capacity, feasibility and shortfalls to the academic council, for approval. These will be based on a thorough assessment about which departments need spacious classrooms and laboratories, possibility to accommodate more students, and where the requirements are minimum,” GU Registrar V P Kamat told Herald.
The relief for now will be shifting of the Commerce and Management faculties to the newly-constructed building in 2016-17, as this assures to cater to the urgent need for more space. “If all goes well, we will be able to use the vacated space (created at the existing building after the shifting of the two departments) to expand other departments. The committee will also look into this aspect,” he added.
The university, accredited with ‘A grade’ by National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC), has a large number of students on the wait list every year. Science, Commerce, Computer Science and Management post-graduate courses are most sought after while applications seeking admissions in the departments of English, Hindi, Konkani and Marathi also exceed the strength.
