Fresh concerns over large-scale mangrove destruction along the Moira riverbank prompted officials of the Goa Coastal Zone Management Authority (GCZMA) to conduct a fresh site inspection in the presence of complainant Dr Nerissa Miranda and local environmental activists. The inspection was carried out by GCZMA Expert Member Harshada Gauns, Engineer Bhargavi Kelkar, and Field Surveyor Siddhi Morajkar following complaints of extensive mangrove cutting in the area.
Speaking at the site, Dr Nerissa Miranda said she had witnessed mangrove cutting and stressed the urgent need for protection of coastal ecosystems. Dr Miranda expressed alarm over the damage caused to the mangroves and stressed the need for immediate action to prevent further environmental degradation. She said that while replanting mangroves may help in the future, the loss of mature mangroves is irreversible and will take decades to recover.
“I have just seen mangrove cutting. We may not know who is responsible, but we must ensure we preserve what is left,” she said. “Planting new mangroves will help, but only after 30 years. What is lost today cannot be replaced immediately.”
She urged citizens to report illegal activities, warning that silence enables further destruction.
“If you see something like this, please reach out to the authorities. People often stay silent thinking it is not their problem, but tomorrow when water enters your house, it will become your problem,” Dr Miranda said. “If you see trucks moving logs at night and you know it is illegal, speak up. Not speaking makes you complicit.”
Convenor of the Goa Green Brigade, Avertino Miranda, said the inspection confirmed massive destruction of large mangroves along the riverbank. He described the loss as irreversible environmental damage, noting that mangroves serve as nesting grounds for birds, crocodiles, fish and other marine life. He further warned that the destruction of these natural barriers exposes nearby residents to flooding and other risks, especially during the monsoon season.
Goa Green Brigade Convenor Avertino Miranda also said the inspection confirmed extensive destruction of mature mangroves. “We have seen massive destruction of mangroves of huge sizes. It is irreversible environmental damage,” he said. “These are nesting sites for birds, crocodiles, fish and entire marine life.” He warned that mangroves act as natural barriers against flooding.
Avertino Miranda demanded immediate action against those responsible for the destruction, stating that the persons in possession of the riverside property should be held accountable. The affected area is located along the Moira riverbank, which connects to the Mapusa River.
“Once mangroves are destroyed, rainwater will enter and there is danger to human life. People living in the area are exposed to flooding,” he said. Avertino Miranda demanded strict action against those responsible. “The culprits must be booked immediately. Those in possession of the property must be held accountable,” he added.
