PANJIM: The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) on Saturday said that the tropical cyclone – Hudhud, which developed over the Bay of Bengal will bring in heavy rains for a couple of days, but nothing beyond that.
“Clouds from the centre of the cyclone have made the conditions generally cloudy in the evening,” IMD Goa Director V K Mini said. Goa is safe from the cyclone Hudhud but the State will witness heavy rains for next couple of days.
“Goa is 60 percent safe from the tropical cyclone. The balance 40 percent will bring in rains but there won’t be heavy winds. Thunderstorms may be reported,” Mini added. Hudhud, a very severe cyclonic storm, is steadily heading towards the east coast of India with wind speeds of upto 170 kmph.
While the day temperature remained above normal 32 Degree Celsius, the night temperatures were normal at 24 Degree Celsius. Panjim city witnessed heavy showers, and thunder on Saturday evening.
Mini said that the conditions are yet to become favourable for the withdrawal of South-West monsoon season from the State, though officially it ended on September 30.
“The withdrawal of monsoon has begun from North but has got distracted due to the cyclone,” Mini claimed.
The three-month monsoon season that entered Goa in the second week of June, ended with the State receiving total 106 inches of rainfall (2604.7mm), two inches less than the normal average. The monsoons have been normal for the State this year.
