PANJIM: Goa lost two of its eminent sons on Tuesday morning, with the death of intellectual giant Dr Jose Pereira and well-known jurist Retd Justice Gurudas Datta Kamat, both known for their exemplary simplicity.
Dr Pereira, a world-renowned theologian, historian, artist, author, teacher and musician died in New York, while Retd Justice Kamat died at KLE hospital in Belgaum.
While Dr Pereira, a polyglot, began teaching at Fordham University, New York, as early as 1970, his singular contribution to deciphering Konkani as an independent language is most cherished. In 2012 he was conferred the Padma Shri.
A retired Chief Justice of the Gujarat High Court, Kamat was the first Goan to become a chief justice and held various important judicial positions. He was also Member of Senate and of the Faculty of Law of the University of Bombay from 1980 to 1982. Pg3
