While authorities seem to be in a slumber over their approach towards the fast advancement of the monsoons, ‘Goenkar’ an NGO have taken in their stride the pre-monsoon clean up drive in Canacona Municipal areas.
On Wednesday, ‘Goenkar’, armed with their few members and staff of a beach side shack based at Palolem collected over two truck loads of rubbish from various municipal areas.
According to them, these heaps of rubbish, if not picked up on time would have been carried into the various drains and later washed out to the river and sea.
Goenkar member Nandip Bhagat, stating that a small step will make a big difference, said, “How we wish that we got cooperation from the general citizens and the government. We could have worked wonders on the cleanliness front.” Lamenting on the lack of support from both quarters, Vikas, another member of the organization said, “We are left to our limited resources. But we won’t give up and will strive to make and keep Canacona clean and beautiful.”
Incidentally on Wednesday, starting as early as 6 am, Goenkar (some of the members), assisted by staff of a restaurant based at Palolem began collecting rubbish and garbage from almost all the municipal areas as part of their pre-monsoon clean up drive so that not even a single piece of plastic waste would get washed into the drain. Rubbish and plastic was collected in heaps, which filled up two trucks.
Goenkar has also made a frantic call to the people of Canacona to voluntarily segregate the waste generated at their end.
Interestingly, Goenkar’s move has received wide acclamation for their tirade against the garbage menace and even a thumps-up within political clouts. But the NGO is simultaneously asking for active participation from the concerned people to fulfil the dream of a Clean and Beautiful Canacona, sources stated.
