Panjim: Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Goa Police, Vimal Anand Gupta, on Thursday said that the Goa government has agreed to allow use of a portion of the Aguada jail at Sinquerim as a detention centre.
He said that in the absence of a detention centre, the
police are facing a problem of where to lodge foreigners involved in crimes, especially those staying without valid documents. He said the Police will propose that the detention centre accommodate at least 30 persons.
The DIG said there are professional surety agents in the coastal belt who provide surety in court to bail out foreigners involved in crimes. This nexus has to be highlighted, he said, and people should be made aware of the implications.
Gupta urged people renting out residential premises to cross verify with the police documents which tourists submit while taking possession of the houses.
