PANJIM: Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar on Monday said the government has initiated process to take over the management of Margao-based Chowgule Higher Secondary School, as the deadline to start admissions for Std XI lapsed today.
Speaking to media persons, Parrikar said in next two-three days, government will take over the management and appoint an administrator who would start the admission process.
“But, if the Chowgule Education Society begins admissions for Std XI before our final order, then the process to take over can be held back,” he said adding “on Saturday, last, directions were issued to school management to start the admission process by Monday, which they failed to do”.
Chief Minister maintained that as per the Goa Education Act, the director of education is the sole authority to decide about the closure of any educational institution in the State, and in case of the Chowgule College, the director of education has clearly denied such permission.
“Hence the management is under obligation to start admissions,” he said.
Parrikar said that though the matter is sub-judice, the college cannot stop the admissions as there is no stay by the High Court on admissions.
The matter before the Court is scheduled for June 17.
With SSCE results being declared, students had rushed to the college for admissions. Some had even tried online, but sources said admissions were allegedly not being accepted.
Earlier, parents had petitioned Director of Education over the matter while Fatorda MLA Vijai Sardesai and BJP leader Damodar Naik had approached the government demanding that it take over the college management.
No admissions until HC hearing: CES
MARGAO: The Chowgule Education Society has ruled out admissions to the higher secondary school until the High Court hearing scheduled for June 17, even as 550-odd students registered themselves for admissions to the higher secondary school till date. Chowgule Higher Secondary school Principal, Prof RV Gaonkar told Herald that the Management would take a call on the admissions only after the High Court hears its petition on June 17, challenging the decision of the Department of Education rejecting permission sought to close down the school. ‘The Management has not taken any decision so far. We will take a decision only after the High Court hears our writ petition on June 17,” he said.
