MAPUSA: After commencing online classes, the State government appears to be in “no mood” to improve the infrastructure of some schools. A visit to the Government Primary School at Moira exposed its sorry state of affairs.

Since COVID pandemic, schools have commenced online classes for students. The sorry state of affairs of the primary school building appears that the Education Department has turned a blind eye towards the maintenance of the educational institutions especially schools. The Government Primary School at Moira requires immediate repairs as its roof and tiles have been completely damaged. The building is covered with grass and trees giving it a shabby look.
According to sources, the school building is used by anti-social elements for consuming alcohol as several liquor bottles are found in the area. as With the gate open, stray animals too use this building for shelter.
Locals said the anganwadi in the ward too operates from this building and the anganwadi teacher is forced to work in such pathetic condition. The school lacks a proper toilet and the stuff provided to the children has been eaten by rats.
They said for the past two years they have been asking the local MLA to repair the school building but in vain.
The locals also said two years ago, the MLA along with GSIDC officials held a site inspection, but after that nothing materialised.
Senior citizen Vasudev Naik said, “I have studied here but it is sad to see the school’s pathetic condition. For the past two years I have been asking the local MLA to look into the school’s pathetic condition but till date he has not done anything. I request the Education Minister to intervene and visit the school and get it renovated”.
A local Sameer Gadekar said, “The building’s roof has been damaged and the tiles too are broken. There is no proper toilet facility for the anganwadi teacher and staff. Two years ago, the local MLA along with GSIDC officials had inspected the building but nothing happened. We found beer bottles and some persons even defecate here. Next month, there is Saraswati puja and we want the MLA to look into the matter and come out with a solution”.
