PANJIM: Congress in Goa on Thursday alleged that the Manohar Parrikar-led government is not taking it seriously despite the fact that the government has no majority that can be proved in the House.
Congress leaders, including Goa Pradesh Congress Committee President Girish Chodankar, Leader of the Opposition Chandrakant Kavalekar and party spokesman Ramakant Khalap addressed the media reacting to Goa Governor Dr Mridula Sinha’s failure to communicate to them on their demand for one-day special session or to dismiss the incumbent government and the Goa Legislative Assembly Speaker Dr Pramod Sawant disallowing the no-confidence motion moved against him.
Chodankar recalled that all 16 Congress MLAs had given a notice of removal of the Speaker Pramod Sawant under relevant rules of the House. “What is surprising is that Speaker himself has decided on the notice against him and has rejected it. We strongly condemn the illegal act,” he said.
“State government has adopted care-a-damn attitude towards the opposition which is dangerous to the essence of democracy. The arrogance of BJP-led government can be seen since they are in power in the Centre,” he said.
Recalling the memorandum given to the Governor, the Leader of the Opposition said their demand to dismiss the government and invite the single largest party to prove their majority by calling for one day session has gone in vain. “Till date we have not received any reply from the office of the Governor. It looks like the opposition party is being taken for granted and the State government is overconfident,” Kavalekar said.
He questioned the government’s reluctance to call for a session to prove its strength on the floor of the House. “If they have the numbers let them prove it on the floor of the House. Let people also know. Why are they not ready to do so?” Kavalekar said.
