PANJIM: Goa Pradesh Youth Congress Committee (GPYCC) has decided to launch a State-wide anti-drugs signature campaign to mount pressure on the government authorities such as the police to act against the growing narcotic trade along coastal belt.
Addressing media persons on Tuesday, GPYCC president Varad Mardolkar alleged that drugs and prostitution activities are rampant along the coastal belts of Calangute, yet police authorities have failed to take action to weed it out. “Police are blind folded towards the increasing drug menace and related illicit activities,” he charged.
Mardolkar said that Youth Congress members will soon launch a State-wide anti-drug signature campaign to escalate pressure on government to curb drug trade.
Meanwhile, GPYCC lodged a complaint with State Police Complaints Authority (SPCA), Cyber Crime Cell of Goa Police and Goa Human Rights Commission (GHRC) against Head Constable Pundalik Gaonkar attached to Sanguem Police Station for making viral on social media a photo of a Youth Congress leader, alleged booked by police for manhandling at a party.
Mardolkar said the pictures of Youth Congress Sanguem block president Meshu D’Costa, who was falsely booked by Sanguem police, under pressure from former local BJP MLA, taken as a part of arrest formality, were leaked on social media.
“Head constable Gaonkar took his pictures on his personal mobile and later circulated it on WhatsApp thus defaming his image,” he said. D’Costa is currently out on anticipatory bail.
GPYCC in a complaint to Director General of Police and Under Secretary Home has demanded investigation and immediate suspension of Gaonkar.
“There has been systematic campaign to use police to target Congress workers. Congress workers are being harassed and defamed,” Mardolkar charged.
