Burglars decamped religious items worth Rs 8,350 from two roadside religious structures in the vicinity of Gulem-Canacona on Wednesday night.
According to police, the burglars took away donation box, bells, divlis and other costly items, all worth Rs 8,350 from Ganesh Gumti situated at Karmalghat.
Police said complainant Sanjay Subhash Dessai of Kindlem informed that Pujari had locked all entries to the Ghumti at about 6 pm on Wednesday and on returning at 8.30 am on Thursday, he found the lock broken and almost all the items, including donation box missing.
Two bells (Rs 2,000), two divlis (Rs 2,500), Nandadeep (Rs 1,400), other utensils (Rs 450) and donation box containing cash Rs 2,000 have gone missing from the Ghumti at Karmalghat.
Some residents from nearby Canacona had recently erected Lord Ganesh Ghumti, after a tree root resembling the face of elephant God was discovered at the site.
Incidentally, this is the second highway religious structure targeted by the culprits on Wednesday night, as devotees at Gulem too woke up to the news of burglars gaining entry to their age-old Shri Bhumipurush Temple existing along NH-17.
Anticipating such thefts, sources informed that temple committee members have been regularly taking out the cash every night, which incidentally left the burglars to lay their hands only on divlis and bells.
However, police informed that no complaint of any theft at Shri Bhumipurush Temple, Gulem, was lodged with them, even though sources informed that a police team was seen in the temple premises checking out the temple premises, including the broken main door which culprits have probably resorted to gain entry.
Sources informed that divlis and bells have gone missing from Shri Bhumipurush Temple.
