The unions have raised doubts over whether the Rs 39 crore budgetary provision made by the government to GU would benefit students.
Various students unions under the banner of ‘Voice of Students’ addressed the media at Goa University on Thursday demanding immediate intervention of university officials and the State government in issues concerning the students’ future.
Akshay Madkaikar said that the reevaluation fees are hiked every six months and have now reached to Rs 500, whereas the examiner gets Rs 20. He said that there is no account of where the rest of the money goes.
“We demand that the fees be lowered as it is not possible for all students to apply for reevaluation. If the marks are increased then the money should be refunded to the students because it is not the student’s fault,” Madkaikar said.
He said the union had written to the university Registrar, Education Minister and Chief Minister five months ago but have not received any reply.
Akshay Mahale, Student Union leader of Goa Engineering College said the reevaluation results take two and a half months to be declared and that leads to student’s missing job opportunities.
The unions have demanded the government’s intervention in the university functioning and in its affairs. “If government can intervene in the extension of GU officials then why can’t the same government interfere in crucial issues concerning students?” asked Rahul Naik, another student leader.
The unions claimed that the university is at present 40% under staffed and so are other colleges. They have demanded that quality staff be appointed in the colleges and have resolved to start a movement next academic year if GU fails to resolve the issues.
