In a midnight incident, an open Gypsy vehicle plunged into the Corjuem ferry wharf after the occupants reportedly relied on Google Maps for directions. The mishap came to light early Monday morning when villagers noticed the vehicle submerged in the river.
Firefighters from the Mapusa Fire Station were immediately rushed to the spot. To assist fire brigade, two local residents from Aldona bravely entered the deep waters and fastened the vehicle, enabling the fire brigade to tow it out safely.
According to fire officials, four occupants were inside the vehicle at the time of the incident. The group hails from Chandigarh and is currently residing in Moira. Although no major injuries were reported, the recovery operation revealed several beer and liquor bottles inside the vehicle, raising suspicion of possible drunk driving. Fire brigade thanked the two residents of Aldona who helped them in removing the vehicle.
Fire officials stressed the need for strong preventive measures, suggesting that the concern authorities construct a safety gate or barrier at the wharf to avoid such incidents in the future, especially during late-night hours.
Aldona MLA Adv. Carlos Alvares Ferreira visited the site to take stock of the situation. He assured the locals that necessary precautions and safety installations would be taken up on priority.
The MLA also issued a word of caution—particularly to tourists—urging people not to rely blindly on Google Maps when travelling in Goa.
“Goa is a small state with many narrow and interior roads, which can be risky at night or along water bodies. Visitors must remain alert and avoid depending solely on GPS navigation,” he said.
Local residents have also demanded better signage, reflectors, and barricades at ferry points to prevent repeat incidents, especially during the night and monsoon season.
