HC summons Collem PI in illegal sand extraction case

PANJIM: The High Court of Bombay at Goa on Tuesday asked the Collem Police Inspector to appear in person to give 

details of alleged illegal sand extraction in Ragada river.

While hearing a suo motu petition, the Court expressed its displeasure over the action taken report by the Directorate of Mines and Geology and the Collem police for failing to identify the perpetrators of illegal sand extraction. 

It sought further action taken by the Directorate of Mines and Geology in the matter.  

The Court also asked the Collem PI to remain present in the Court on Monday, June 19 and to submit details about the investigation in the recent case of alleged illegal sand extraction in Ragada river as reported in a section of press.

Since the Advocate General Devidas Pangam was absent, the matter was posted for next hearing on Monday.

The Court in the past had constituted a committee to recover all the losses and damages caused due to illegal sand extraction. 

It had also asked the authorities to auction the plant and machinery seized during the raid and to initiate criminal proceedings against the accused, a former ZP Member.

The Directorate of Mines and Geology had recovered about Rs 23 lakh after sale of the properties from the accused arrested for illegal sand extraction. The Directorate had to recover more than Rs 1 crore from the accused, the court was told.
