Iconic Campal lighthouse demolished after being declared unsafe

The iconic Campal Lighthouse behind Kala Academy in Panaji was demolished on Sunday after authorities declared the structure unsafe due to severe structural deterioration. The landmark, which had stood along the Campal promenade for decades, was brought down using heavy machinery as part of a public safety exercise.Officials said the lighthouse had developed major structural weaknesses that posed a potential risk to residents and visitors. Following technical assessments, the authorities decided demolition was the safest option to prevent any untoward incident. The demolition attracted the attention of locals, many of whom gathered to witness the end of a structure that had become a familiar feature of Panaji’s waterfront. The lighthouse was widely recognised as a landmark and often served as a popular backdrop for photographs and evening walks along the Campal promenade. While many expressed sadness over losing a piece of the city’s heritage, officials maintained that public safety had to remain the top priority. They added that the deteriorating condition of the building left little scope for restoration.
