MARGAO: The village panchayat of Cavelossim inaugurated a new dog shelter and rescue centre, along with a designated feeding area for dogs, at Mobor Beach. The facility was opened by Dr Murugan Appupillai, Director of Education at Mission Rabies and a former ITEC Expert at the High Commission of India. He was joined by Cavelossim Sarpanch Dixon Vaz and other panchayat members during the event.

Highlighting the initiative’s goal, Sarpanch Vaz stated, “This step reflects our commitment to mitigating dog attacks, particularly along the beach areas where such incidents involving tourists and locals have been increasing.” The shelter is equipped with dog cages designed to isolate and treat aggressive dogs. Vaz explained that, with the assistance of the Goa Animal Welfare Trust (GAWT), the captured
dogs will be treated and rehabilitated to reduce risks to the community.
Dr Murugan commended Sarpanch Vaz for leading this project and pledged the continued support of his team to achieve its objectives.
The entire project is being funded by a starred resort in Mobor as part of their Corporate Social
Responsibility (CSR) efforts for the village. The inauguration event also saw the participation of numerous animal lovers, who expressed their willingness to support and contribute to the initiative.
It may be recalled that the Cavelossim village panchayat had earlier urged the District Collectorate for intervention,
following which it was
decided to identify land
for such a dog shelter in
the village.
