PANJIM: The people living along the coastal belt are advised to exercise caution as the sea conditions are expected to be rough and experience surges – gushing of sea water into the low lying areas-intermittently from September 7 to 9 due to the effect of high swell waves. Panjim, Mormugao and Vasco areas have been put on alert.
The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) Goa Observatory has said that high swell surge warning has been issued by Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS), stating possibility of surging of waves during the high-tide times in the low lying areas of the coasts during the period from 11.30 hours of September 7 to 23.30 hours of September 9.

Also, IMD has informed about formation of low pressure over South East and adjoining East Central of the Arabian Sea and as such fishermen are advised against venturing along and off Karnataka-Kerala coast from September 6 to 8. Heavy rainfall is expected in the State from September 9. Thunderstorm warning is also issued for three days.
As per IMD (India), the southwest monsoon will start its withdrawal from Kerala in the coming week.
In a press statement, IMD Goa said it is forecast that sea will be rough near shore and the low-lying areas of Mormugao, Panjim and Vasco may experience surges due to the effect of high swell waves with 1.7 metres to 2.3 metres in height.
The IMD has directed that water-based recreational activities along the coast be suspended during the period.
The fishermen are advised against entering into sea and that plying of boats very near to the coasts may be avoided. “The coastal region will have its significant effect,” IMD said.
However, the effect of the event in the open ocean is likely to be minimal.
The southwest monsoon has been very active along Goa coast since its onset, with the State witnessing nearly 27 per cent surplus rains till date. As on Sunday, the total rainfall received was 137.31 inches, as compared to the annual average of 108.46 inches.
