Hospicio was once again in the news on Monday when a male ophthalmologist was conspicuous by his absence for an hour-and-half when an child was brought to the hospital with eye injuries.
The incident occurred around noon when a one-and-half year old child from Maina Curtorim was rushed to the hospital with a deep cut on the eyelid. The boy was examined in the Hospital casualty, but could not be treated immediately for want of the male ophthalmologist.
Frantic calls by the telephone operator as well as by the PRO failed to evoke any response from the ophthalmologist and the child was made to wait for more than an hour and half till he was attended by a female ophthalmologist.
A Hospicio doctor said the casualty could not attend to the victim since he had sustained injuries to the eye.
Hospital sources in the know said that this is not the first time that doctors were found conspicuous by their absence during emergency situations. “The Health Services should order a probe into the episode and also ascertain the doctors who are found missing while on duty”, demanded the source.
