Canacona: Members of NGO ‘Goenkar’ vexed at not being provided a vehicle by the municipality to transport the bags of garbage collected by them, dumped all the bags in Canacona municipality building on Tuesday.
Team Goenkar consisting a group of young businessmen mostly from Palolem area have taken the responsibility to collect the garbage strewn on roadsides over the last couple of years.
And as a part of the clean and green environment they had initiated the cleanliness drive over the past fifteen days amassing over 200 bags of garbage from Karmalghat up to Palolem beach area.
On Monday and Tuesday, along with the aid of volunteers and eight paid labourers, 50 bags of garbage were collected from Mastimoll, sheller and the area surrounding vegetable and fruit market at Chaudi.
Speaking to this correspondent Sandesh Telekar an active member of ‘Goenkar’ said that they had requested the Municipal authorities to send a vehicle to transport the garbage bags to the treatment plant at Dumane. “We were asked as to who has authorised us to collect the garbage from beside the highway. They refused to send a vehicle to pick up the garbage,” Telekar said.
Exasperated by the indifferent attitude of the Municipality the members of ‘Goenkar’ got rid of all the bags numbering about 50 in the corridor of the Municipal building.
On noticing garbage bags being stacked in the corridor and passage of the building Municipal authorities filed a police complaint requesting them to investigate the matter.
