MARGAO: Goa Muslim Forum has urged Chief Minister Laxmikant Parsekar to honour the promise made by Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar by building a spacious kabrastan for Margao’s Muslim community.
The Forum has also demanded a ban on organisations trying to honour the assassin of Father of the Nation Mahatma Gandhi.
Addressing the media, Forum President Ifitikar Sheikh said that successive governments have only paid lip service to the long-pending demand of a kabrastan for the Muslim community. “The existing kabrastan at Pajifond-Margao is not only being used for the Muslim community from Margao but across Salcete. The rocky land has been found unsuited to meet the requirements”, he said, while demanding the utilisation of the land acquired for the kabrastan at Sonsodo.
Iftikar said the file pertaining to the kabrastan at Sonsodo has not made much progress in recent months, while demanding that the government take up the work on topmost priority.
On attempts made by certain Hindu organisations for re-conversion of Muslims and Christians into Hinduism, Ifitkar condemned the move, but expressed confidence that the 100 crore Hindus in the country will reply to the re-conversion plans.
