PANJIM: In view of the acute shortage of water at Porvorim, Minister Rohan Khaunte, who is the local MLA, has urged Public Works Department to stop giving new water connections for residential and commercial use till the crisis is resolved.
In a recent communiqué to PWD Minister Ramkrishna (Sudin) Dhavalikar, Khaunte, has also requested that short term, midterm and long term plans be chalked out to ensure his constituents are not affected.
“One of the reasons for the water woes is release of new water connections without knowing the severity of such act keeping in view the capacity of water. Therefore, no new connection for residential/commercial be released until the issue of water problem is fully resolved. I therefore desire that the PWD Minster takes serious action to resolve the issue once and for all by getting long term, midterm and short term plans for the constituency and gives necessary directions,” Khaunte said.
Speaking to the media, Khaunte pointed out to the acute water shortage across the three panchayats in Porvorim for the last six months. “The situation has gone from bad to worse. Our residents hardly have water and people have to depend on water tankers and packaged bottles,” he said, citing that despite his meeting with the PWD minister earlier, there is no change.
The local MLA also sought that experienced engineers from the water supply section be deputed to ensure equal distribution of water.
