MARGAO: Margao Police on Friday recovered the knife used in the murder of Margao jeweller Swapnil Walke.

Mustafa Shaikh, one of the accsed, was taken to the spot by the police in search of the weapon and it was then recovered. Mustafa had a knife on him when he ran on the road after the crime and while climbing down the thickly-vegetated slope of the hillock had dumped the knife there.

Two of the accused, Shaikh and Omkar Patil, have been sent to 10 days police custody. Mustafa, Patil and Edson Gonsalves are being investigated for the murder of Walke.

The fourth suspect, Evander Rodrigues, is yet to be nabbed. The accused who have been arrested are being interrogated.

Police have also been scouting the area around the crime scene to take statements of people who were around when the murder took place. People who were around the crime scene were being contacted by the police till Friday evening.

The transfer of the case to Crime Branch has evoked mixed feelings. On the one hand people consider the transfer as a positive step but are suspicious as Margao Police have come under a cloud for alleged inability to handle the situation post the incident.
