Konkani needs support of people to flourish: CM

MARGAO: Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar on Saturday said that Konkani will flourish only if the people of Goa support the language in all spheres of activity, even as he announced that the Entertainment Society of Goa will extend financial support to the production of Konkani music.

Speaking at the launch of Deep Karapurkar’s fifth Konkani music album title Hazar Zaitam in the presence of ESG vice-Chairman Damu Naik and noted Konkani writer Udhay Bhembre, Parrikar said Konkani will not thrive if the people do not support the language. ‘I have said earlier and I am saying again that there’s no threat to Marathi which has the backing of 10 crore people. We may love and use Marathi, but it is our responsibility to support Konkani language and see that it thrives in the state”, he added.
Saying that Goa has made a mark and earned laurels in the sphere of Konkani music, Parrikar said that music is one of the most powerful mediums which can help take Konkani to greater heights.
Saying that the brief before the Entertainment Society of Goa is not just to promote films and performing arts, Parrikar gave his mandate to ESG vice-Chairman Damu Naik to carry forward the work of extending financial support to the music as well.
Damu Naik and Uday Bhembre also spoke.
Hazar Zaitam is a double CD album with 16 Konkani songs which dwell on the themes of love, beauty and devotion.
