PANJIM: Addressing the problem of illegal mushrooming of scrap-yards in the State, Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar Thursday said that the government would identify some areas away from industrial estates exclusively for scrap yards.
Parrikar said, “By December we will try to give them some separate place,” agreeing that scrap yards are posing a big problem all over Goa. He told the House that there was a decision on this issue which was taken three years ago which has not been implemented till now.
The chief minister also pointed out that Industrial estates are opposing scrap yards within their jurisdiction for fear of thefts.
“We can find some areas two kilometres away from industrial estates,” he said. Thereafter no more scrap yards would be permitted in villages and urban areas.
The chief minister and revenue minister was replying to a zero hour notice raised by Tivim MLA Kiran Kandolkar who complained bitterly over increasing illegal scrap yards in Tivim constituency.
“There are at least 44 scrap yards operating illegally in Colvale,” he said, in addition there were four permitted by the panchayat but they generate no revenue for the local body.
Kandolkar said, “These scrap yards are along highways and are a problem for traffic and for security.”
Furthermore he said that some are operating below 110 KVA power lines posing danger. He urged the government to investigate into the increasing illegal scrap yards not only in his constituency but all over Goa. Kandolkar urged that the scrap yards be given place within industrial estates.
