Leopard rescued from well at Poinguinim

POINGUINIM: Forest officials at Canacona rescued a leopard from a well at Poinguinim on Tuesday morning.

The incident came to light when Vivekanand Prabhu Gaonkar went to fetch water from the open well and was shocked to see the leopard in it.

The Forest department of Canacona Wild Life was alerted and the rescue operation to rescue the female leopard was hampered in the initial stage as a large number of curious onlookers flocked to the site and despite pleas from the Forest department officials they refused to move away from the site.

According to Canacona RFO (wild life), the leopard was rescued from the well and is kept at the Hatipal Animal Care Centre at Poinguinim.

Sources in Forest department informed that they have received many complaints from the residents of Poinguinim claiming that wild animals stray in their residential areas and they have laid traps to catch the animals.

Sources informed that there are many agriculturists in Canacona have open wells and wild animals, snakes and domestic animals have frequently fallen in these wells.
