MARGAO: The destruction caused by sand erosion on the coastal belt of South Goa have raised an alarm amongst the local residents, fishing community and environmentalists.
While the Tourism Department, Water Resources Department and Goa Coastal Zone Management Authority (GCZMA) inspected the Colva beach and put in place temporary measures, the situation was moving out of hand and turning from bad to worse at the Mobor beach in Cavelossim.

“We are concerned about the sand erosion on the Mobor-Cavelossim shoreline. We are losing at least 20 metres of coastal line high tide line (HTL) every year. If proper measures are not taken on time to protect the coast line, the fishermen will have nowhere to run during storm surge, cyclone, tsunami and the likes,” a local Roy Barretto said.
“Our Mobor Cavelossim village is a topographically beautiful place having sea on one side and River Sal on the other,” Roy added while emphasising that the coastal village is suffering the brunt of the consequences from recent natural disasters and heavy rainfall.
The locals have demanded that the State government authorities pay more attention to this beach and check out the extent of damage caused by soil erosion. From trees being uprooted, to the beach losing its original shape and size, locals fear that the situation will go out of control if not attended to soon.
The locals were also frustrated that the beach was recently flooded with tar balls, another issue that they feel the government had not tackled properly.
